OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

MR. KARLIN PRINCIPAL
Wow! The school year is up and rolling. I want to thank all of the parents who joined us for our Open House this past September. I truly enjoyed meeting new families and talking with returning families as well. Our book sale was a large success. We made some money for our students and we will receive a larger percentage of profits in April when we have the larger book fair. If you were not able to join us for this event, but still have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.

In October parents will receive information on their children’s fall assessments. This information will provide teachers with an idea on how to customize instruction to meet the needs of each child. We will also be able to use it to chart growth over the year. This will help us to meet all of our academic goals. Parents are always welcome to contact their children’s teachers if they have questions when these results are made available.

Students in grades four and five will receive their spring 2009 MCAS scores shortly. We are excited to report that Bowe School showed improvements in the area of English Language Arts and met all of its improvement targets in every category. In the area of Math, growth was also seen; however, we did not meet improvement targets in every area.

As we move along through the year, I want to encourage parents who would like to volunteer in the school or even join their child’s class on a field trip to please complete a CORI form in the front office. These need to be completed every year. Do not wait until the week before your child’s fieldtrip to complete this form!

ATTENTION ATTENTION

Our School Council has several open positions for parents! This elected group meets six to eight times during the school year. The role of the School Council is to support the building principal in creating a School Improvement Plan. The Council also assists in long range planning for the school. If you would like to participate and run for a School Council position, please do not hesitate to contact me at 594-3431.

We had a wonderful showing at our last PTO meeting. I see great events in the future. If families would like to join us, we will be meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 6:30PM in the library. We will provide childcare.

MRS. GAINLEY VICE-PRINCIPAL

RESPONSIBILITY.

Do what you are supposed to do • persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

A Responsible Person:

We received a lot of Bulldog Writing Assignments for the month of September. The students enjoyed listening to their papers read over the intercom. Many Bowe students were awarded a Bulldog Award in September. Keep up the great work!

Here is a submission on last months’ word: Respect
Respect is all about self-control, honesty, manners, and positive and negative choices.
When you choose a positive choice, you will get a positive consequence. When you choose a negative choice, you will get a negative consequence.
Not all consequences are negative. Also, when you tell the truth, you will be trusted.
When you use manners like please, thank you, and you are welcome, you will get positive response. Last but not least... self-control. When you use self-control, you need to empower yourself. When you empower yourself you think twice before you do or say something. You also treat others the way you want to be treated. That is all about respect!

MRS. ROBISON  Notes from the Clinic

The first month of school has flown by and the clinic has been very busy. We have started doing screenings and they will continue throughout the year. We do heights & weights, head checks & scoliosis screening later in the year for 5th graders. Vision & hearing screenings are done by technicians from the Board of Health. Fluoride rinses will begin the week of Oct. 5 and dental screenings will begin this month.

Check out the new Bowe School Clinic webpage at http://sites.google.com/site/peboweclinic/. There is a link on our school webpage to reach this site also. The site is a work in progress and will be updated throughout the year.

Contact me in the clinic if you have any questions or concerns.

MS. ROOKS PRESCHOOL ROOM B3

We are getting used to the routines and activities here in preschool. Your children would love to teach you the songs we have been singing in class. Ask them to sing "Walking, Walking" "The More We Get Together" and "The Goodbye Song" for you. I hope everyone is enjoying the school supplies we have sent home in the new backpacks.

Please remember that picture day is October 9th. Order forms will be sent home in about a week.
Elleigh's family has donated some clothes to supplement our spare clothes collection. If your daughter wears size 4T, please let me know and I will let you browse through them. We have plenty to share.

Finally, there is a family art project coming up soon! We are going to decorate small white pumpkins with colored tissue paper in fall colors, and all of you are invited to participate! Please save the date for Friday, October 23rd. We will be doing this activity at approximately 10:45 AM and 2:45 PM that day.

MRS. LEIGHTON  LIBRARY NEWS

The Bowe School Library is up and running for the 2009-2010 school year! I am Mrs. Midge Leighton, the new Library Media Technician. As most of you know, Mrs. Marlene Midura has retired after 37 years of service to the Chicopee School System. I hope to
continue to foster the love of the library, reading, and books that Mrs. Midura instilled in the students of Bowe School.
Thank you to those of you who stopped by our 'mini' Book Fair on the evening of Open House. Our sales did quite well considering our shortened version of what is to come in the spring. Look for more information on the spring book fair in April.
I will continue to collect the Box Tops for Education, as it allows us to purchase
much-needed items for the school library.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for making me feel
welcome into the Bowe School community, and I look forward to working with all of you.

Remember...

A Fall Song By Ellen Robena Field

Golden and red trees
Nod to the soft breeze,
As it whispers, "Winter is near;"
And the brown nuts fall
At the wind's loud call,
For this is the Fall of the year.

Good-by, sweet flowers!
Through bright Summer hours
You have filled our hearts with cheer
We shall miss you so,
And yet you must go,
For this is the Fall of the year.

Now the days grow cold,
As the year grows old,
And the meadows are brown and sere;
Brave robin redbreast
Has gone from his nest,
For this is the Fall of the year.

I do softly pray
At the close of day,
That the little children, so dear,
May as purely grow
As the fleecy snow
That follows the Fall of the year.
